They rode on a traain to California to get away from thier uncle who wanted to marry Esperanzas mother. They arrived in California to go and work with Miguels familia,and to work in the fields. She started to work in the sheds evne though she wasn't old enough. She was saving up her money to bring back her grandmother some how. Miguel got hired as a mechanic but then soon got replaced by people who where coming in from Oaklahoma.The next day Esperanza yelled at him for not speaking up about it to his boss.The next morning Esperanza went to get her mother from the hospital and when they came back everyone was happy that she was home again when they all went to bed Esperanza was going to show her mother how much she had saved up but someone had taken it.Miguel had taken it but didnt tell Esperanza about it one day Alfonso came to get Eseranza and take her to Los Angeles. First he was killed, their home burns and then they must move to another country and she has to leave her grandma behind.
